Privacy

GameJar is played by children, so it is built to collect as close to nothing as a working app can. Your family's profiles and scores live on your device. Nothing about a child is sent anywhere unless a parent signs in to sync it.

The short version

  • Playing needs no account, and nothing you do in a game creates one.
  • Player profiles and game results are stored on the device, in the browser.
  • There is one sign-up page. It is a parent's, it is public, and we cannot check anyone's age.
  • No ads, no advertising identifiers, no third-party trackers or analytics.
  • No uploads of any kind - there is no photo picker, no file field, and no free-text box that leaves your household.
  • No sharing, no invites, no friend list, no chat, and no leaderboard outside your own household.
  • Crash reports are off unless an adult turns them on, and never carry a name.
  • Nothing about you or your children is sold, rented or handed to anyone.

What stays on the device

A player profile is a display name, one of eight colours and one of twelve built-in glyphs, all picked from a fixed set - which is why nothing needs uploading. A game result is the game, the date, the score or time, and whether it was finished. Both live in your browser's storage on the device you played on, are not sent to us, and nothing in the app shows one family's profiles to another.

Children's privacy

GameJar is meant for roughly 10-13 year olds and the adults who play with them. There is no field for any of it: no email address, no date of birth, no photo, no location, no contacts, no phone number - and no advertising identifier and no third-party code. Nothing a child does in GameJar creates an account: the games, the players screen and the scoreboard need no sign-in and read no database of ours. Pick a first name or a nickname; the app does not need a real one. If we hold something about your child that we should not, email us and we will delete it.

The parent account, and what we cannot check

GameJar has one sign-up page, at /auth/signup, and it is public. It is meant for a parent, and the terms require an adult - but there is no age check anywhere in GameJar, and we cannot verify who fills it in. An account holds an email address and either a hash of the password chosen there or a link to the Google account it was created with, plus the name and picture Google hands over. That is the whole of it, and none of it is a child's.

An account exists so a household's profiles and scores can follow it to a second device. That sync is the only way anything about a child leaves the device, and it is visible only inside that one household. Signing in is never required to play; if you never do, we hold nothing about you. What we hold is never sold, rented or shared - we would hand it over only where the law leaves us no choice.

Crash reports

Off by default, and while they are off a crash goes to your browser's own console and no further - no network call at all. Settings has one switch for anonymous crash reports, off until an adult turns it on. With it on, a report carries the route, the error type, the build number, and the file and line - never an account, a profile name, a score, puzzle content or the error message text.

Cookies and third parties

Nothing GameJar stores in a cookie identifies a player. Loading any page sets two housekeeping cookies belonging to the sign-in library - a CSRF token and a callback URL - which carry nothing about you or your children. Signing in adds a session cookie; signing out clears it. There are no advertising cookies, and no third-party scripts, fonts or images on any page: the content security policy blocks outside requests outright, so a tracker added by accident would fail visibly rather than collect quietly.

If you email us

The contact form sends us the name, email address and message you type in, so we can reply. There is no mailing list to add you to. Please leave your kids out of it - we do not need their names to answer a question.

Deleting your data

  • One player: delete the profile from its detail screen. Its results on that device go with it.
  • This device: "Delete this device's data" in Settings drops GameJar's whole database and unregisters the offline worker - every player and every result, gone for good. Clearing this site's data in your browser does the same by hand.
  • A parent account: "Delete account" on your account page. Type DELETE to confirm and it removes the account, its household, and every profile and result synced to it - immediately, with no copy kept. It does not reach this device's own copy; that is the step above. Emailing us works too.

Changes, and how to reach us

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Questions go to support@gamejar.app or through the contact form.
