Guess the Word

Find the five-letter word in six tries. After each guess every letter is marked: green is in the right place, yellow is in the word but somewhere else, grey is not in the word. One word a day, and unlimited practice once you have played it.

Type any five-letter word and press Enter. Every tile then tells you one thing about that letter:

• A filled dot and green: that letter is in the word and in exactly that place.
• A ring and amber: that letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
• A dash and grey: that letter is not in the word at all.

The shapes carry the same news as the colours, so the board still reads if green and amber look alike to you.

Repeated letters. The word only has as many of a letter as it has. Guess GEESE against SPEED and you get one green E and one amber E - the third E is grey, because SPEED has just the two, and both are already spoken for. This catches everybody once.

A guess has to be a real word from the list. One that is not is rejected and does not cost you a turn, so there is no harm in trying.

There is one word a day for everyone on this device. Once you have played it, Practice gives you as many new words as you want, and practice games never touch your daily streak.

Touch: tap anything on the board to use it. Every button and key is at least 44px tall, so it works with a thumb. The squares of a board are as big as the screen allows - on a small phone some of them are smaller than that, which is why the keys and the number pad, not the squares, are what you type with.

Keyboard: Tab moves between the controls and Enter or Space activates the one you are on. That covers the buttons the game screen always has - Pause, Restart and this page's link - as well as anything the board adds.

Pause stops the clock and freezes the board; Restart gives you a fresh one.

Your score is how many guesses you need. Fewer is better.

There is one new puzzle a day, the same one for everybody on this device, and playing on days in a row builds a streak. Once today's is done you can practise as much as you like.
