How to play

Color Sort

Pour the paint until every cup is one colour. No reading needed.

Rules

Tap a cup to lift it, then tap another cup to pour. The paint on top moves across if the other cup is empty or has the same colour on top, and has room. Sort every colour into its own cup, in as few pours as you can. Every colour has its own shape too, and Undo takes back a pour for free.

Each cup holds up to 4 layers of paint. Every colour has exactly 4 layers, mixed up across the cups, with 2 empty cups to start. Sort them until every cup is either empty or holds four layers of one colour.

  • Tap a cup to lift it, then tap the cup to pour into. Tap the lifted cup again to put it back down.
  • You can pour onto an empty cup, or onto a cup whose top layer is the same colour, as long as it has room.
  • A pour moves every layer of that top colour that fits. If the other cup only has room for two, two move and the rest stay put.
  • A pour that is not allowed moves nothing and does not count. The cup stays lifted so you can try another.

Every colour has its own shape as well, drawn on each layer, so you can sort by shape if colours are hard to tell apart. Undo takes back your last pour, as many times as you like, and gives that pour back to your count.

The daily has 6 colours and is the same for everyone that day. Practice deals a fresh puzzle each time, with 4, 6 or 8 colours. Every puzzle can be solved.

Controls

Touch: tap anything on the board to use it. Every button and key is at least 44px tall, so it works with a thumb. The squares of a board are as big as the screen allows - on a small phone some of them are smaller than that, which is why the keys and the number pad, not the squares, are what you type with.

Keyboard: Tab moves between the controls and Enter or Space activates the one you are on. That covers the buttons the game screen always has - Pause, Restart and this page's link - as well as anything the board adds.

Pause stops the clock and freezes the board; Restart gives you a fresh one.

Scoring

Your score is how many moves you take. Fewer is better.

There is one new puzzle a day, the same one for everybody on this device, and playing on days in a row builds a streak. Once today's is done you can practise as much as you like.
