Offline Games Checklist: On a Road Trip | GameJar

What to set up before you are on a road trip with no signal, and what to do once you are there.

Road trips usually fail in stages. First the signal goes, then the battery starts to look fragile, then everyone discovers they are still in the car. This checklist deals with the dull practical parts before they become a problem, so your child has something ready to do when the road gets long and the bars disappear.

Pro Tips

  • *Open each game you expect to use, not just the home page, before you lose signal. It is a short test that can save a long sulk later.
  • *If your child gets carsick, start with short rounds like Guess the Word or 2048 before moving to longer grid puzzles.
  • *Use the first hour for solo play and save pass-the-device games for later, when conversation has thinned out and everyone needs a change.
  • *A daily puzzle can work as a built-in checkpoint. One at the start, one after lunch, then practice rounds or generated puzzles for the final stretch.
  • *When the battery drops below the level that makes you uneasy, plug in immediately. Waiting until 2 percent is not bold, it is just paperwork with worse timing.
