Offline Games Checklist: After School | GameJar
What to set up before you are after school with no signal, and what to do once you are there.
After school is a narrow bit of time. Your kid is tired, not ready for homework yet, and fully capable of turning ten spare minutes into a small constitutional crisis. This checklist gives that half hour some edges, so the device works offline, the game fits the mood, and stopping does not become a second event.
Pro Tips
- *If your child arrives home flat rather than lively, start with a puzzle that ends, such as Mini Crossword or Mini Sudoku, before offering anything endless.
- *The best after-school timer is one you set before the snack appears. Once they are already playing, every minute somehow acquires legal status.
- *For siblings, choose games where turn-taking is obvious. Connect Four, Dots & Boxes, and Salvo are better here than improvised sharing rules.
- *If the house is noisy, put the break in the least social corner available. A short reset works better when nobody asks three questions while it is happening.
- *Keep this slot boringly repeatable. Same place, same length, same stop rule. Children are often more reasonable when the system, not you, is doing the insisting.
